Harrogate businesses back marathon fundraiser

Simon Thomas, who is raising funds for The Principle Trust Children’s Charity

Businesses from Harrogate town centre are backing a marathon-sized challenge to support needy children from Wharfedale, Nidderdale and beyond.

Thirty independent businesses have pledged their support for the 26-mile-long walk to raise funds for The Principle Trust Children’s Charity which provides free respite holidays to children who are underprivileged, disadvantaged, disabled, have life-limiting conditions, or who have experienced poverty, trauma or abuse.

This Sunday, 17 July, 62-year-old charity trustee Simon Thomas will depart from the cenotaph on Parliament Street at 7am, circumnavigating the A61 around Harrogate town centre 13 times to clock up the marathon distance. Mr. Thomas expects to complete his challenge within 8 hours, aiming to finish back at the cenotaph by 3pm.

Independent businesses lining the two-mile-long route are promoting the challenge and encouraging customers to make donations at their premises.

Preparing for his ‘Harrogate Hike for Holidays’ Mr. Thomas said,

‘Over the last decade the Trust has helped thousands of disadvantaged, disabled and poorly children to escape their everyday troubles and create valuable, happy memories. The Trust’s 100% donations policy ensures every penny raised directly benefits children and their families and we are indebted to all the Harrogate businesses who are supporting this fundraising challenge.’

One Harrogate mum, who recently returned from a week’s respite holiday in one of the charity’s lodges said,

‘Our week away gave me and my two young children such wonderful memories and a chance to relax and escape the reality of fleeing from domestic violence and the struggles that come afterwards.’

Simon is hoping to raise £2500 for the charity which supports families from Harrogate and beyond via referrals from local agencies including Early Help, IDAS, Carers’ Resource and Harrogate Town Family Assessment and Support Team.

Donations can be made at one of the participating businesses and online at www.localgiving.org/fundraising/hiking-harrogate-for-holidays/
