‘In the Field’ Seminar Coming To Huddersfield As Part of Kirklees Year of Music 2023

As part of a new series, The Current Climate, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival (hcmf//) are pleased to announce an upcoming seminar, In The Field – a deep dive into radical artistic practices that address environmentalism and climate change. These seminars are part of the Kirklees Year of Music 2023 Music Industry Programme.

Taking place on Thursday 30th June (7pm) at Small Seeds in Huddersfield, this free event will host a panel discussion unpicking the motivations artists have for addressing climate action in their music, as well as the expectations the music industry places on individual creators. Experts will be discussing responsibility and influence, who should be leading the charge towards sustainability in the music sector, and how artists can make an informed impact with their work.

Panellists include Amy Cutler an artist, cultural geographer, curator, writer, and film-maker who works with ideas of geography and non-human others. Nwando Ezibie, a Todmorden-based multidisciplinary artist. Nwando creates Afrofuturist speculative fictions and alternate realities at the intersection of live art, experimental music and multi-sensory installations. And Sophie Cooper, the Learning & Participation Officer for hcmf//. A composer, improviser and practitioner, Sophie also makes music as a solo artist and as a member of The Slowest Lift. One final panellist is set to be announced shortly.

After the panel, there will also be a screening of a short film from Amy Cutler. Working across what she calls ‘living cinema’, Amy’s work directly responds to the ‘age of extinction’. Her new documentary, All Her Beautiful Green Remains In Tears, was co-composed with artificial intelligence. It explores ‘climate anxiety and the afterlives of nature documentary’. Alongside a screening of the film, Amy will discuss her use of movie-making as a tool to document the climate emergency.

Sarah Hutton, Music Industry Coordinator at Kirklees Year of Music said: “We’re really looking forward to the upcoming seminar at Small Seeds discussing such an vital topic for the industry! The panel is brimming with experts who are really knowledgeable about climate action in music and will be offering tangible insight to all those working across the sector.”

The event is free to attend and you do not need to book a ticket in advance.

The event is produced by hcmf// in partnership with Kirklees Council; supported by Music in Kirklees Year of Music 2023.
